Best Mobile Hotspot Devices for Travel

A dedicated hotspot keeps laptops, tablets and a whole family's devices online without draining your phone. Here's which one to buy, and which kind of data to put in it.

cellphoneplans.co is independent and reader-supported. When you buy through links on this page we may earn a commission from Amazon or eBay at no extra cost to you. We don't accept payment for placement, and we don't publish made-up prices, speeds or ratings — tiers ($ to $$$) show relative cost only. Carrier plans, perks and discounts change often; always confirm current terms on the carrier's own site before you switch.

Your phone can share its connection, but a dedicated mobile hotspot does the job better for anything beyond occasional use. It has bigger antennas, a battery that doesn't compete with your calls and navigation, and the ability to keep many devices connected all day. Hotspots are popular with road-trippers, RVers, remote workers, students and families who travel with several devices.

We chose these hotspots on network compatibility (unlocked vs carrier-locked), 5G band support, Wi-Fi standard, battery, Ethernet and external-antenna options, and brand track record. We don't publish invented speed numbers. Real performance depends on the network and signal where you are. If you only need a hotspot now and then, read phone hotspot vs dedicated hotspot first.

Unlocked or carrier hotspot?

Carrier-sold hotspots (from Verizon, T-Mobile or AT&T) are often cheaper up front or bundled with a data plan, but they're usually locked to that carrier and may carry a device payment plan. Unlocked hotspots cost more but work with any compatible carrier's SIM, so you can switch data plans, use prepaid data, or pop in a local SIM abroad. For flexibility, buy unlocked. Our unlocking guide covers carrier devices you already own.

Watch out for

  • Expensive
  • mmWave only helps in dense cities
Best value unlocked 5G

2. Netgear Nighthawk M6

$$

Best for: Travelers and remote workers who don't need mmWave

The M6 drops mmWave but keeps sub-6 5G, Wi-Fi 6, Ethernet and Netgear's excellent management interface. For most people outside dense downtowns it performs similarly to the Pro for less money. It's unlocked and works with major carriers.

What we like

  • Unlocked sub-6 5G

A high-capacity USB-C power bank extends any hotspot's runtime for long travel days, and charges your phone too. Choose a reputable brand with USB-C PD output. See car chargers for in-car power.

What we like

  • Doubles hotspot runtime
  • Charges phones and tablets too

Watch out for

  • Adds weight
  • Check airline rules for large batteries

What to look for

Which data plan to put in it

A hotspot needs its own line, a data-only or tablet/hotspot plan. You'll typically choose between:

Read the fine print: many plans deprioritize or slow hotspot data after a threshold. Our best hotspot and tethering plans guide compares the options, and data throttling explained covers what "unlimited" really means.

Hotspot as home internet?

A hotspot can work as a temporary home connection or an outage backup, but most plans aren't designed or priced for heavy home use, and hotspot plans often slow down after a data threshold. For a primary home connection, a dedicated 5G home internet plan or fixed wireless is usually better value. See 5G home internet vs cable at CompareInternet and best cellular internet backup devices.

Tips for better hotspot performance

Security on the road

A hotspot creates your own private Wi-Fi network, which is safer than public Wi-Fi in cafes and hotels. Use WPA3 or WPA2 with a strong password, turn off WPS, and don't share the password widely. For extra privacy, run a VPN on your devices or on a travel router connected to the hotspot. See best travel routers.

Frequently asked questions

Is a mobile hotspot better than using my phone?

For frequent or all-day use, yes. It has better antennas and its own battery, supports more devices, and frees your phone. For occasional use, your phone's hotspot is fine.

Do mobile hotspots need a separate plan?

Yes. A hotspot needs its own line, usually a data-only, tablet or hotspot plan, or a prepaid data SIM.

Should I buy an unlocked hotspot?

If you want flexibility to change carriers or use local SIMs abroad, yes. Carrier hotspots are cheaper up front but usually locked.

Can a hotspot replace home internet?

Temporarily or as a backup. For a primary connection, 5G home internet plans are usually better value with fewer limits.

Do hotspots work internationally?

Unlocked hotspots work with local SIMs if they support local bands. Cloud-SIM hotspots like GlocalMe and Solis sell data packs for many countries.
