Wireless charging used to mean fiddling to find the sweet spot on a pad. Magnetic alignment, first with Apple's MagSafe and now the open Qi2 standard based on it, snaps the phone into the right position every time. Chargers are faster, more efficient and cross-compatible, and Android phones are joining in.
We picked these chargers on standard (MagSafe, Qi2, Qi), magnetic alignment, build quality, heat management and brand reliability. Wired charging is still faster and more efficient for a quick top-up. See GaN vs standard chargers at ComputerGear for that side.
MagSafe vs Qi2 vs Qi
- Qi is the original wireless charging standard. It works with nearly every wireless-charging phone, but without magnets, so alignment matters, and it's generally slower.
- MagSafe is Apple's magnetic system for iPhone 12 and later. Apple-certified MagSafe chargers support the fastest wireless charging on recent iPhones.
- Qi2 is the open magnetic standard built on MagSafe's design. Qi2 chargers work with MagSafe iPhones and Qi2 Android phones. A newer, faster Qi2 version (often marketed as Qi2 25W) arrived in 2025.
Qi2 and MagSafe chargers also charge non-magnetic Qi phones, but without the magnetic snap, and usually at lower speeds.

What about Android?
Android is catching up. Some newer Android phones build Qi2 magnets in, while others are "Qi2 Ready," meaning they support Qi2 charging but need a magnetic case to snap onto the charger. Check your phone's specs. If it doesn't support Qi2, a regular Qi charger or a magnetic ring adapter still works, just without full Qi2 speeds.
Choosing the right type
| Type | Best for |
|---|---|
| Stand | Desks. The phone stays readable, good for Face ID and notifications |
| Pad / puck | Nightstands and travel |
| 2-in-1 / 3-in-1 station | Charging phone, watch and earbuds together |
| Magnetic power bank | On-the-go charging without cables |
| Car mount charger | Navigation and charging while driving |
Heat, speed and battery health
Wireless charging loses some energy as heat, and heat is the enemy of battery longevity. Good chargers manage heat with better coils, and some stands include cooling fans. Phones also slow charging when warm. To keep your battery healthy, use optimized or adaptive charging features, avoid charging under a pillow or in hot cars, and remove thick cases that trap heat. See phone battery health.
Power adapters matter
A wireless charger is only as fast as the power adapter behind it. Many don't include one. Use the wattage the charger's maker recommends, usually a USB-C PD adapter of a specified wattage. An underpowered adapter means slow charging, or a charger that won't work at all.
Cases and wireless charging
Thin cases work fine with wireless charging, but for magnetic alignment you need a MagSafe or Qi2-compatible case with built-in magnets. Otherwise the phone won't snap to the charger. Metal plates, card wallets and thick rugged cases can block charging entirely. See best cases and screen protectors.
Wireless charging in the car
Magnetic car mounts with built-in charging keep your phone in view for navigation and topped up. Look for Qi2 certification, a strong magnet that holds over bumps, and a charger that plugs into a sufficiently powerful USB-C car adapter. In hot climates, vent mounts help keep the phone cooler while charging. See best car mounts and chargers.
Travel charging setups
For travel, a foldable 3-in-1 Qi2 station handles phone, watch and earbuds from one USB-C cable, which reduces the chargers you pack. Pair it with a compact multi-port GaN charger that can also power a laptop. A magnetic power bank covers flights and long days out. Check your watch model's compatibility, since watch chargers are often brand-specific.
Wireless charging and phone cases for kids and teens
Kids' phones often live in thick protective cases that can block wireless charging. If you want wireless charging for a family phone, choose a protective case marked MagSafe or Qi2 compatible. Many rugged cases now include magnets. A charging stand in a common area, like the kitchen, doubles as a household rule for where phones sleep at night.
Wireless charging safety
Use certified chargers from reputable brands. Cheap uncertified chargers can overheat or damage batteries. Don't charge with metal objects like coins, keys or cards between the phone and charger, and keep chargers off soft surfaces like beds and couches, which trap heat. If a phone gets unusually hot while charging, remove it and let it cool.
Frequently asked questions
Is Qi2 the same as MagSafe?
Qi2 is based on MagSafe's magnetic design and works with MagSafe iPhones. Apple-certified MagSafe chargers can still offer the fastest charging on some iPhones.
Do Qi2 chargers work with Android phones?
Yes, with Qi2-certified Android phones. "Qi2 Ready" phones need a magnetic case. Regular Qi Android phones charge without the magnetic snap.
Is wireless charging bad for my battery?
It generates more heat than wired charging, and heat ages batteries. Use a quality charger, avoid thick cases and heat, and turn on optimized charging.
Why is my wireless charger slow?
Usually an underpowered adapter, poor alignment, a thick case or a hot phone. Use the recommended adapter and a magnetic case.
Can I use a MagSafe charger with a case?
Yes, with a MagSafe or Qi2-compatible case with magnets. Thick or metal cases can block charging.
